How the term is used
Sound is introduced into the material and reflected by boundaries, geometry or discontinuities. Pulse-echo, through-transmission and phased-array techniques are examples.
Where you may encounter it
Qualified personnel use ultrasonic methods for thickness measurement, bond inspection and internal flaw detection under approved procedures.
Poor coupling or incorrect calibration can hide relevant indications or create false results.
